CBN scores big in exams

KUALA LUMPUR: In spite of its recent row over the appointment of a new principal that thrust the school into an unwanted limelight, the students of SMK Convent Bukit Nanas yesterday made sure the institution was known for a far more meaningful reason — academic excellence.

Showing little sign of being affected by the controversy surrounding their shortestserving headmistress in the school’s 112-year history, 81 students did not hide their jubilation as they racked up straight As in the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination.

Also, with the exception of Geography, the students scored a 100 per cent pass in all subjects, resulting in a slight improvement in the school’s Aggregate Grade (GPS), which now stands at 1.52.

Acting principal Chee Poh Kiem said the improvements in PMR results was not expected.

“I expected a drop actually,” she told The Malay Mail.

“It was not easy handling this batch of students; they are a playful lot and it took plenty of hard work to get them motivated.”

Calling it a good day at the office, Chee said she was pleasantly surprised by the results.

“We had conducted clinics to help weak students, did Internet revision with them and also made sure everyone subscribed to Score A, where we monitored their usage hours,” she said on the school’s initiative to help motivate the students.

A total of 267 students sat for the examination this year at the school, one of the largest batches in recent times.

CBN was mired in controversy over the past two weeks following the Education Ministry’s appointment of Datin Seri Zavirah Shaari as the new principal, a move that did not go down well with the school’s board of governors, which started out as a Catholic missionary school.

The board had cried foul that the ministry did not adhere to the “maximum consultation process” when selecting the principal, and also did not choose one from the list of potential principals given to the ministry by the school board previously.

The proceedings at the school hall were not presided by a principal as Zavirah had cleared her desk yesterday after requesting for a transfer from the school, effectively making her the shortest-serving principal in the school’s history.

MOST 15-year-old girls might want new gadgets as a gift from their parents.

However, SMK Convent Bukit Nanas student Georgina Shobah Janes just wanted World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) figurines and mock championship belts, a wish that is likely to come true after scoring 7As in her PMR examinations yesterday.

“I love watching wrestling on TV. I am crazy about the sport. So, I told my mum if I got 7As, I wanted to have the figurines and, if possible, a championship belt.”

Her mother, 47-year-old businesswoman Anne Joseph, was well aware of her daughter’s love for the rough sport for years and said: “I believe in rewarding them.

“I had expected her to score these results and was confident of her ability. I would do my best to get her what she wanted.”

But while Anne has yet to fulfill her daughter’s wishes, Magdalene Chew Ong jumped the gun in rewarding daughter Beatrice Ong May Ching before her results were even released.

“I believe in rewarding her for her effort, not only results. Whatever it is, I am proud of her,” said the 49-year-old private university lecturer.

Beatrice got a guitar from her mother and racked up 7As.

One of the school’s highest scorers is Aieshah Ainuddin with 8As.

Her mother, Maryati Rahmani, also a teacher at the school, said she expected Aieshah to do well.

“But she was not confident of herself when she had finished the exams.”

For the 2nd year running, Cindy Lee Sze Wern (Form 2N) was awarded the Gold Medal for being top of the cohort in Malaysia.

Dr Wee Kah Siong, Deputy Minister of Education presented winners with the awards.

Pauline : Champion House

Our first big school event, the CBN Annual Sports Day was held at the Cheras Football Stadium at Bandar Tun Razak on the 6th March 2010 at 8.00a.m. Heavy rain delayed the official opening of our Sports meet but at 8.45 a.m. we started our event. The girls’ spirits were not dampened inspite of the wet, soggy ground conditions and spectators cheered loudly at the glorious and colourful march past which was led by the flag-bearers of police cadet corp.

Our guest-of-honour, the Director-General of Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Dato Salleh bin Yusup, Chairperson of the Board of Governors, Dr Indrani Manual, former CBN Headmistress, Mrs Alice George,  invited guests and many parents witnessed the great effort put up by our wonderful girls, teachers and staff towards this 70th Sports meet.

Among the more popular events were the Inter-House Cheerleading Competition, the Placard/Marching Items and the teacher/PTA telematch competition. We were very pleased that this year’s inter-house cheerleading competition was of a very high standard with Xavier House winning lst place and Adele House finishing a close second.

Ms Roslinda Samsu(SEA Games and National women’s pole vault gold medallist, 2005) officially closed our Sports Day program. Special thanks to Mr Zaiful Zainal Abidin from UPM who graciously gave away some of the prizes. Pauline House won the Marchpast and Adele House was the Best Placard/Banner bearer. The overall champion House was Pauline with 1505 points.

Everything went on very smoothly despite the initial hitches and we ended this significant school function on a happy note.

We are very proud of your achievement and wish to thank all students, families and teachers of CBN for the hard work in ensuring excellent academic results. We cannot rest on our laurels yet as there is more to do. A+s are in vogue!!!!!  Although laborious studying may seem to be now, there are great rewards and self-satisfaction to be reaped from achievement of targets/ambition. We pray all our efforts and work will bear fruit and be recognized.

CBN and SJI making a 'kolam'

St John Boys were here on the 26th October 2009 for a RIMUP Programme with the girls. Activities held were  weaving ketupat, kolam and making Chinese lanterns. They had a culturally enriching time. Students brought traditional food like rendang, muruku and other traditional delicacies.

CBN Everybody’s Day was held on 23rd October, 2009 a Friday. The event was officiated by the Deputy Director of PPD Keramat, Puan Hajah Hanim Ibrahim. This year’s theme was CBN1Malaysia. 433 students received their certificates through participation in various curricular areas;  sports, uniform body, clubs and societies. Students enjoyed tremendously the concert which followed prize giving. Geetha and Yap Yee Xuan(4K) won the ‘Miss Everybody’ award this year. They performed ‘Marjinah and Apek’ , a scene from Ali Baba Bujang Lapok.

SPIRITS are soaring high at Convent Bukit Nanas (CBN) as it prepares to celebrate its 110th anniversary.

Thus, alumni, current students, teachers, ex-teachers and parents are cordially invited to the sit-down dinner, which will be held on Nov 8 at the Sunway Resort and Spa Hotel.
