SMK Convent Bukit Nanas is a premier school where English is used with considerable ease and students show a keen interest in pursuing English related activities.

English has been chosen as our niche area because our girls have been consistently doing well in the English Language. Most of the time we have 100% pass in the subject with a large number of them getting A’s; for instance in the 2009 SPM, we had 144 students getting 1A and 38 students getting 2A. Thi smeans 70% of our students had distinctions in English. The same goes for PMR. We had 206 students out of 231 students scoring an A; a whopping 89.17%.

As English is one of our niche areas, the school encourages the participation of its students in competitions and programmes related to the language, The school also takes the initiative to train and coach students in preparation for these competitions.

This year students excelled in 3 major competitions:

1) Choral Speaking (K.L. State Champs)

2) Debate (K.L State Champs)

3) Spell-It-Right(K.L Runner-Up)

The school is indeed proud that the students have indeed done very well in these co-academic competitions especially since English is our niche area. Moreover English being a global language it is even more crucial that students do well in it.

Teachers too had in-house training that helped them to better themselves in the teaching of the English Language. The 3 courses the English Teachers attended were:

1)The Item-Building Course

Teachers were exposed to criteria that should be taken into account before an examination paper is set

2)Writing and reading course by British Council- This course exposed teachers to the various methods to teach reading and writing in English which the teachers could employ in their classroom teaching.

3) Marking MUET papers- Teachers were exposed to the marking of MUET writing papers. Question I was done. Next year Question II will be done (MOst probably at the beginning of the year)
